Wizards at the Supermarket
Presented by Malcolm Morrison (Wellington/Te Whanganui-a-Tara)

An improvised exploration of the interesting, but often missed aspects of fantasy and science-fiction: the mundane. Learn how to tell stories in the Fantasy Normalism (or the Mundane Fantastic) genre, which delights in taking the crazy, out-there characters from Fantastical genres (superheroes, supernatural, sci-fi) and treating them as real people.

Exploring the practical questions in these stories with the mundanity of the human experience leads to hilarious, and very relatable comedy. Think Looney Tunes skits, Gary Larson’s Far Side, or What We Do in the Shadows.

Participants will learn how to world-build effectively and superimpose human values onto the unknown.

Note: Participants may be cast from the workshop to perform in the Wizards at the Supermarket show. Casting is at the discretion of the teacher.

Workshop Length: 3 hours
Recommended experience level: Intermediate (1-3 years experience)

Meet Malcolm Morrison (he/him)
Malcolm started performing nearly two decades ago as a founding member of Dunedin’s Improsaurus – a troupe with the mad idea of creating whole new shows every two weeks. He’s now based in Wellington, New Zealand, and shares his love of long-form narratives, with a taste for grounded characters in larger-than-life worlds.
